Mozilla Firefox 2
Wednesday, 25 Oct 2006 00:11:32Mozilla finally released the public version of their long-awaited Firefox 2 web browser.
I still don’t like the new skin and the themes I used, along with one or two extensions I need, are still not working – but otherwise everything is nice and smooth. Aside from the already known features with anti-phishing, spell checking, search engine management &such, they also fixed a series of more or less annoying speed issues, bugs and crashes (both from previous Release Candidates and from the Firefox 1.5.* versions).
More details are available in the Release Notes.
And go go download.

Uni Adventures
Tuesday, 24 Oct 2006 16:08:33After classes today, Zander and I went to ask a few details about the CISCO and the Japanese classes at the uni, as well as see if and how we could get accounts for the MSDN Academic Alliance, as one of our teachers mentioned.
After a quick visit at the secretary’s office who directed us to where we were supposed to actually go and a few minutes of wandering through the corridors of the uni in search of those rooms, we managed to get to the IT department – which had a big “Access Denied” sign on the door. Okay, let’s go in and ask.
So we entered a quite weird room, with several sexy computers, and headed to the guy who said he handles the CISCO issues, as well as the MSDNAA ones. Between two phone calls, a teacher horrified by the sight of a lab with only German-or-whatever-like keyboards (those with three symbols on the keys) and me barely trying not to smile in a too noticeable way at the sight of the “ladies” he had posted near his desk, we managed to get those MSDNAA accounts and pointed out to the first floor, where we were supposed to get more details about the CISCO classes. Note to self here: try using only one e-mail address and remember it correctly.
We then went to the third floor, to the Foreign Languages Department and see if we could find anyone who could tell us more about the Japanese classes. It took a little longer to roam the twisted corridors of the uni this time, but we eventually emerged victorious and found a really nice teacher or dean or …whatever he was who gave us more information (370RON/year, anyone interested can come and sign up, btw) and told us that, because some groups have already started the course, we’d have to wait until December and get assigned to a new group then. We left some phone numbers, an older student who had already taken those courses wished us luck (yes, I, for one, will sure need it :D) and off we went to complete the CISCO quest.
Obviously, we failed to find the place where we had been directed to and we were rather bored and tired by then, so we said we’ll leave it for another time, especially since we had been told that we’d only start in mid November, most likely, if we decided to sign up.
Oh, and I got a sexy red cover for the notebook where I’m supposed to keep track of the students who come at the classes and those who don’t. At least it will make my task more …colourfully pleasant.
And now, I’m off to start learning hardware stuff for the project I have to present in a few days. The horror.

My Cats
Tuesday, 17 Oct 2006 22:07:27I have them both in my arms, now, as I’m writing this.
They’re purring, napping with their heads on my hand. Both of them.
They’re happy, they’ve been staying with me ever since I got home, walking everywhere I went, sharing my pillows or sleeping in my arms.
I’m sad. Instead of enjoying every second with them, I’m thinking that I could stay here only one night and in a few hours I’ll be leaving again. Without them.
There are few other things or living creatures that I love as much as I love my cats. Most of those things I can take around with me and to other people I can always keep in touch somehow.
But I can’t take my two darlings with me. And I can’t hold them in my arms, caress their soft fur and feel them purring blissfully. I can’t look into their eyes, see their sluggish or graceful movements and I can see them play only in some lifeless and dull video recordings.
But I will see them soon, again.

Watching Lately
Friday, 13 Oct 2006 08:21:45After the uni classes and the extra hours of “team building” we did in a nearby pub over some beer (or other non-alcoholic beverages), I came home to find that my Internet was not working. I asked Jen to look for a phone number to call tech department. I called tech department. Some lady – rather unaware of what was going on – told me they’ll solve it soon. Oh, I bet they will.
Next thing, when Jen asked me if, by any chance, I wanted to go see a Spanish movie, I said “yes” without hesitation. And I’m quite glad I did. The movie we went to – Tesis – was quite captivating, the course of action was not so predictable and I enjoyed the fact that the actors played their parts in a pretty natural way. And I could actually understand most of it even without reading the English or Romanian subtitle. All in all, I’d say it was well worth the waiting in line for tickets part, as far as I’m concerned.
In other movie-related news, I resumed watching Futurama and I’m really excited about seeing the upcoming episodes of Heroes, a recently launched TV series.

Raising a Plant
Sunday, 08 Oct 2006 14:14:27I have a new green friend.
Gab: Is it bad if I ended up talking to a plant?
DarkWidow: It’s bad only if it answers back.
Gab: Not yet, I’m still working on that.
![]()
Gab: I’ve watered it and dusted its leaves.![]()
DarkWidow: I want a plant that headbangs. \m/
Gab: I don’t. Next thing it will want to go to concerts with all sorts of weird people and come back home late, stinking because of all the cigarette smoke and alcohol.
![]()
DarkWidow: Wait… What are we talking about again?
![]()
LE: Click here for a more or less related funny toon (via Bomi). Too bad my plant doesn’t bloom.
